STEP 1

PREPARATION

Preparation for the written test... You'll have to pass a written test as part of achieving your private pilot license. You may take the test at any time during your flight training, or up to two years in advance of completing your training.

STEP 2
DUAL INSTRUCTION

Dual instruction...
This is the phase of flight training that entails having your instructor with you in the flight training aircraft. The majority of hours flown before obtaining your license will be with an instructor.

STEP 3
SOLO
TRAINING

Solo flight training...
One of the major milestones in learning to fly is your first solo flight. When your instructor believes you are ready, he or she will "set you free" to fly on your own as you work toward the completion of your flight training. You will need to complete at least ten hours of supervised solo flight.

STEP 4
CROSS-
COUNTRY

The x-country flights...
An important element of your flight training will entail conducting a "trip" in the airplane. You'll depart from one airport and land at one or more different airports before returning to your home field. This exercise will ensure your ability to fly and navigate. Your flight instructor will oversee each cross country flight.

STEP 5

CHECK RIDE

The oral and practical test...Once you have completed the different flight training requirements, you will need to pass a "check ride". The check ride entails an oral exam followed by a hands-on flight test, both of which you must pass to obtain your private pilot license. You must take your check ride with an FAA designated examiner.

MINIMUM 40 HOURS OF FLIGHT TRAINING

To become a private pilot you must amass a minimum of 40 hours of flight training of which, 20 hours will be duel instruction with a certified flight instructor, and 10 hours will be solo. The following is a general breakdown of the hour requirements.
20 HOURS DUAL INSTRUCTION
10 HOURS SOLO FLIGHT
 3 HOURS NIGHT FLIGHT
 3 HOURS INSTRUMENT FLIGHT
 2 HOURS DUAL CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT
 5 HOURS SOLO CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT

These numbers are the minimums, and actual time will vary by individual.

LET'S GET STARTED
